Analytical Differentation of Black Powder Toners of Similar Polymer Composition for Criminalistic Purposes
نویسنده
چکیده
The aim of this research was to investigate the possibility of differentiation between black powder toners of similar polymer composition applying analytical methods: Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR) and Xray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF). The studied materials were black powder toners of similar polymer composition sampled from the cartridges of 34 machines (31 models purchased from 11 manufacturers). Due to similar polymer composition only small differences in IR spectra of the investigated powders were observed, such as the appearance of peaks of weak intensity or modified shapes of the spectra. However, for eight samples the observed differences were sufficiently significant to regard these samples as chemically different. In cases when the differences in IR spectra were significantly smaller, XRF method was used to differentiate the samples. The samples differing in respect of elemental composition were regarded as different and, accordingly, the corresponding differences in the IR spectra were regarded significant. The proposed analytical procedure may be applied to forensic examination of documents.

Microscopical reflection-absorption by infrared spectroscopy (R-A IR) was shown as a viable technique for analyzing the polymer resins contained in dry, black photocopy and printer toners. The sampling technique involves a heat transfer of the toner from a document to the reflective surface of aluminum foil followed by analysis by R-A IR. The technique is simple, fast, and readily available to ...

Toners are micron scale polymer particles constructed of several kinds of resin, pigment, wax, etc. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is used for observation of the dispersion of the component materials in toners, but TEM images cannot identify simultaneously all components. Scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) not only provides simultaneous observation of spatial distributions of...

Copy toner samples were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy with X-ray dispersive analysis (SEM-EDX) and pyrolysis gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). Principal component and cluster analysis of SEM data for 166 copy toner samples established 13 statistically different subgroups, with the presence or absence of a ferrite base being a major division. When toners were compare...
